It was evidently the holed shape of the Witch Stone that gave it its magical properties, as in later years round iron washers were hung up on houses and stables for the same purpose. It probably originated as a female sex symbol.

Like the Shepherds' Crown, the Witch Stone is of great antiquity as a magical object. Naturally perforated pebbles were found with Romano-British urn burials on Lancing Down, Sussex. If I am right in thinking that they derive their power and magic from being female sex symbols, then they may have been buried thus as symbols of the portal of rebirth or reincarnation. Shells, another female sex symbol, are often found in primitive burials, I believe for the same reason.
